Jersey taxi driver questions timing of service review

A senior Jersey taxi representative has questioned whether there is a wider motive behind a government review of the island’s taxi regulations. Mick Tostevin, secretary of the Jersey Taxi Drivers Association, said he was concerned about the timing of a visit by a representative of Uber, the app-based ride-hailing company, which coincided with the announcement of the review. Infrastructure Minister Jonathan Renouf rejected the suggestion of any hidden motive. He said: “I want to make clear that there is no hidden agenda behind this review”, and said he had not invited an Uber representative to Jersey. Mr Renouf said the

Around 100 black cabs heading to Disneyland Paris as part of this year’s Magical Taxi Tour will all be LEVC TX models, the first time in the event’s history that the entire convoy has been made up of the same vehicle. Now in its 31st year, the annual charity event brings together taxi drivers, volunteers and authorities from the UK and France to give children with life-threatening conditions and their families a memorable trip to Disneyland Paris. Fuel price surge puts taxi firms and rural businesses under growing pressure

Businesses across the West of England say rising fuel costs are putting increasing pressure on their finances, with petrol prices approaching £2 a litre in some areas. The continuing conflict in the Middle East has disrupted global oil supplies, while shipping through key routes including the Strait of Hormuz has also been affected. Higher wholesale fuel costs are leaving retailers with a difficult choice: increase prices for customers or absorb the extra cost and see their profit margins shrink. Pieter-Jon Allis, owner of Stroud Taxi in Gloucestershire, described the situation as a “complete nightmare” and said his business was under

Worcester taxi fare U-turn costs council £1,400

Worcester City Council’s “embarrassing” U-turn over taxi fares has cost the authority £1,400, it has been revealed. The council agreed in June to increase the minimum charges for Hackney carriage journeys in the city following a request from the Worcester Taxi Association. However, the proposed price hike was scrapped last week after the association said a survey of its members had shown there was not enough support for the increase. At a full council meeting on Tuesday (September 15), Councillor Alex Mace asked how much the council had spent reviewing the fares, carrying out consultation and producing reports. He called

Brighton taxi fares set to increase under new council proposals

Brighton and Hove taxi passengers could see the cost of a typical two-mile daytime journey rise from £8.70 to £9.30 under new fare proposals being considered by councillors. The proposed changes are due to be considered by Brighton & Hove City Council’s Cabinet on 17 September 2026. Any approval would be followed by equality engagement and the statutory public consultation process before the changes could take effect. The taxi trade has proposed keeping the existing £3 initial meter charge, while reducing the distance covered between subsequent fare increments. The council said the approach would spread the increase across journeys while

Wiltshire taxi fleet shifts towards private hire following Uber licensing

Wiltshire’s taxi trade is seeing a notable shift towards private hire licensing following Uber’s arrival in the county, with the council reporting an increase in drivers registering with the ride-hailing platform. The growth of Uber has coincided with more vehicles switching from hackney carriage to private hire licences, with the council identifying the platform’s dynamic pricing model as a key factor behind the change. In its September 2026 Taxi Licensing Team Update, Wiltshire Council said: “Within its own licensing district, a Hackney Carriage vehicle must use the approved taxi meter and cannot lawfully charge more than the metered fare. Outside

From taxi test pass to professional taxi driver

Passing your taxi driving test demonstrates that you can drive safely, plan ahead and manage risk. But carrying passengers professionally introduces a new challenge: the quality of the journey matters as much as reaching the destination. Passengers will not assess your driving in the same way as an examiner. They may not notice every mirror check or well-planned approach, but they will notice harsh braking, sudden acceleration, rushed decisions and uncomfortable cornering. That makes smoothness one of the first skills to develop after passing. Look further ahead Smooth driving begins with effective observation. Looking well beyond the vehicle immediately in
