FAQs
Once you have paid for your test, you will receive a receipt and confirmation email.
An examiner will then be allocated to you based on availability, as close to your chosen area as possible. They will contact you within five working days (Monday to Friday) to arrange your test, which is typically scheduled within the following 5–10 working days.
You must bring the following items to your test:
- A current and valid driving licence, which your examiner will check on the day. If you do not have this, your test will be cancelled, and you will need to rebook and pay again.
- Your National Insurance number, so the examiner can complete an online driving licence check. No personal details are stored after verification.
- If you have an old-style (non-photocard) licence, you must also bring a valid passport and proof of address.
Yes, you must provide your own car for the test, as we do not supply vehicles. Your car must be roadworthy, have valid insurance, MOT, and road tax, and meet the vehicle requirements outlined for testing.
If your vehicle does not meet the required standards or is deemed unsafe, the test will be cancelled, and you will need to rebook and pay again.
What are the vehicle requirements?
You must provide a suitable car for the test, as we do not supply vehicles. Your car must meet the following requirements:
- It must have valid insurance, MOT, and road tax.
- It must be roadworthy, with working lights, tyres, and no safety issues.
- The examiner may check for dashboard warning lights or any safety recalls. MOT verification may also be carried out before the test.
- Both manual and automatic cars are allowed. Vans are not permitted.
Condition of the Vehicle
- Your vehicle must be clean and hygienic. Smoking is not allowed during or before the test.
- If the vehicle is deemed unsafe or unsuitable for testing (including cleanliness issues), the test will be cancelled, and you will need to rebook and pay again.
Vehicle Specifications
- The vehicle must have four wheels and a maximum authorised mass of 3,500kg.
- It must have fully operational seat belts and head restraints for both the driver and passengers.
Before the Test Begins
- Your driving licence will be checked and validated. If it cannot be validated, your test will be cancelled, and you will lose your fee.
- You will be asked to read a vehicle number plate from 20 metres away. If you need glasses or contact lenses to do this, you must wear them throughout the test. If you fail this check, your test will be cancelled, and the fee lost.
- Your vehicle must be in good condition, with working lights, compliant tyres, and no dashboard warning lights. If it does not meet these standards, the test will be cancelled, and the fee lost.
During the Test
The examiner will assess your driving by asking you to:
- Stop at the side of the road as if picking up or dropping off passengers.
- Complete two reversing exercises, including a taxi manoeuvre to turn the vehicle around.
- Drive independently for about 10 minutes, following road signs or directions.
- Perform a possible emergency stop.
Test Results
To pass the taxi driver test, you must make 9 or fewer driving faults with no serious or dangerous faults. Results are not given on the same day, and your examiner cannot provide them at the end of the test.
If You Pass
Your test result will be processed, and you will receive it within 72 hours (Monday to Friday). If successful, you will receive a copy of your test report and a digital certificate to the email address you supplied when booking.
If You Fail
You will receive a test report explaining your faults. The report will outline the areas that need improvement, allowing you to prepare for a retest. You can then book another taxi test or, if you prefer, arrange training to help improve your skills and increase your chances of passing.
Yes — you can change or cancel your test, but specific time limits apply.
You can change or cancel your test only if one of the following applies:
You request the change within 7 working days of making your booking, and your test date is more than 7 working days away.
You give us at least 7 working days’ notice before your scheduled test date.
Working days are Monday to Friday, excluding weekends and UK bank holidays.
If you cancel or request a change with less than 7 working days’ notice, your test fee will be lost, and you’ll need to book and pay for a new test. The original fee cannot be refunded or transferred, as an examiner has already been allocated and resources reserved for your test. This policy helps cover administrative costs and ensures tests run efficiently.

You can only appeal your taxi test if you believe the examiner did not follow the Diamond Taxi Test Procedures, not simply because you think the result was unfair.
An appeal must be based on valid grounds, such as:
- The examiner did not check your eyesight at the start of the test.
- You spent less than the required time on the road.
- The examiner did not ask you to complete a necessary manoeuvre.
You cannot appeal if:
- You disagree with the examiner’s judgement.
- You think a fault was unfairly marked.
- You felt unwell during or before the test.
- Another driver made a mistake, and you didn’t respond correctly.
If your appeal is successful, we cannot change your test result, but we may allow you to take a free retest or issue a refund of your test fee. However, if your appeal is unsuccessful, you will need to book and pay for a new test.
Wheelchair Assessment
You will need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle to carry out the wheelchair assessment.
Your examiner will bring a wheelchair to conduct the assessment and for the purposes of the demonstration.
You’ll need to show your ability to:
- Safely load and unload the wheelchair in your vehicle.
- Use the wheelchair brakes to secure and release it.
- Fasten the seat belts or safety harnesses.
- Secure any wheel belts or clamps fitted to your vehicle.

FAQs
Once you have paid for your test your details will be forwarded to your nominated examiner at local level, who will be in touch with you within 5 days (Monday-Friday), with a view to booking your test within 5-10 working days thereafter. Some flexibility will be required in terms of location and examiner availability at a regional level, this is therefore a guide and not a guarantee. Test dates ultimately depend on examiner availability and taking into consideration annual leave, bank holidays, and resources at local level. Practical taxi tests are separate to the wheelchair assessment and depending on examiner availability can be booked with the same examiner and taken on the same day.
You will need a current and valid driving licence which will be checked by your examiner on the day of your test, if this requirement cannot be met, your test or assessment will be cancelled, and you will need to rebook and pay again. Your examiner will ask you to provide your National Insurance number in order that online driving licence checks can be made. No details are kept on file after the licence details have been verified. If you have an old style (non-photocard) licence, then you must also bring a valid passport and address confirmation.
You will need an accessible vehicle suitable for the wheelchair assessment (we do not provide cars for wheelchair testing purposes) which has current and valid insurance, MOT, road tax and is deemed by the Examiner to be roadworthy in terms of lights, tyres etc. This can include you or the Examiner noting any dashboard warning lights signifying any safety issues and can even include the Examiner noting any safety recalls currently in place for your vehicle. MOT verification may also take place before a test is conducted. Manual and automatic vehicles are both acceptable for test. Vans are not acceptable on test.
Your vehicle must also be clean and hygienic, you cannot smoke on the assessment or have been smoking prior to an assessment. We reserve the right to cancel any test if there are any faults with the vehicle (or any factor which could impact the safety of the vehicle) and if the vehicle is not in a fit state for test conditions, including factors such as cleanliness and hygiene. If your test is cancelled for the above reasons, you will need to rebook and pay for a new test.
Your vehicle must have 4 wheels and a maximum authorised mass of no more than 3.500kg. You must have fully operational seat belts and head restraints for the driver and passengers.
There is no practical driving on this assessment. The examiner will provide a wheelchair for the candidate on a test.
Before the test or assessment starts
- Your driving licence must be checked and validated in person. If a licence cannot be validated using this service your test will be cancelled and the fee lost.
- We will ask you to read a vehicle number plate from 20 metres away. If you require the use of glasses or contact lenses to read the number plate, then you must also wear these. If you cannot reach this requirement your test will be cancelled, and the fee lost.
- Your vehicle must be presented in a good state of repair, with all lights working, compliant tyres and no warning lights on the dash. If your vehicle does not reach these requirements your test will be cancelled, and the fee lost.
During the assessment, the assessor will ask you to load and unload a wheelchair into the accessible vehicle. The examiner will assess the overall delivery of safely loading, securing, and unloading a wheelchair into an accessible vehicle. The examiner will also assess the delivery of the assessment and a candidate’s customer service skills.
Once your test is completed, your details will be emailed to head office, and you will receive a test result within 72 hours (Monday-Friday). If you are successful, you will receive an email copy of our test report and a Diamond certification on verification of your driving licence number.
If you are not successful, you will receive the test report together with an explanation of the faults. Under no circumstances will you be given a test result on the same day.

You can change or cancel your test only if one of the following applies:
You request the change within 7 working days of making your booking, and your Wheelchair Assessment date is more than 7 working days away.
You give us at least 7 working days’ notice before your scheduled Wheelchair Assessment date.
Working days are Monday to Friday, excluding weekends and UK bank holidays.
